I'm excited to announce the publication of my Sway presentation on Evidence-Based Concussion Management and my certification as an ImPACT Trained Occupational Therapist. Concussion management involves a structured approach to ensure the safe recovery of students and athletes after a concussion, incorporating both cognitive and physical rehabilitation stages. Key components include initial rest, which emphasizes 24-48 hours of rest post-injury to aid recovery, and the Return-to-Play Protocol, which details a step-by-step process from light aerobic exercises to full-contact practice, ensuring a gradual increase in physical activity while monitoring symptoms. The Return-to-Learn Protocol highlights the importance of cognitive rest followed by a gradual return to academic activities, modifying to individual symptom progression, and monitored closely by educators and medical staff. Collaboration between healthcare providers, educators, and families is imperative to creating individualized recovery plans for each athlete/student. This presentation begins with the pros and cons of the Zurich Guidelines for Concussion and provides a thorough look at assessments for post-concussion to manage symptoms. In summary, a structured and individualized approach involving cognitive and physical protocols is essential for the safe and effective recovery of athletes post-concussion. This approach ensures that all relevant parties are involved and that recovery is monitored and adjusted according to each student's needs.

10 days ago, at a speaking event in Florida, USA, I had a very interesting conversation about myths and facts about Chronic Spinal Pain disorder with an elite group of physiotherapists. This group consists of Physiotherapists from 3 continents….There emerges a common theme of facts among patients with chronic spinal pain disorders. Despite all the possible hands-on interventions, Patients still experience persisting disabling pain.. Many clinicians report anecdotal evidence that having investigations such as MRI scans reduces the level of health anxiety which is directly proportional reduction in pain perception. The same goes for CBT…talking therapy along with physiotherapy… 90% of the clinicians agreed with me that, investing the whole first consultation for a thorough examination and patient education instead of squeezing a treatment session in private practice, makes a world of difference in patient-perceived & objective outcomes. All my public speaking experiences and continued learnings have helped me to be a better conversationalist inside the consultation room with my clients. I am glad to see that 90% of elite clinicians across 3 continents experience the same… Can’t underestimate the power of good old chat...😜🤣❤️ Xcel Health ❤️ Xcel Health FCP#publicspeaking #healthcareeducation #continuouslearning

One of the most critical things that you need to do as a provider in the health and fitness industry is continue to learn. Complete your CEUs, study hard for nationally regognized certifications (if your goal is to obtain them) - but even then, - take what you learn and allow it to change the way you treat your patients. Science is always adapting. The way we treat also needs to. Take what you learn and allow yourself to grow as a professional to offer the best patient-(or client)-centered care.
